A local family is preparing for a last minute trip to Hawaii thanks to a generous gift from Make-A-Wish Foundation, but that wasn't the only surprise the family got.

It's been a tough year and a half for 11-year-old Katie and her family. Katie is fighting a rare neuromuscular disorder called Friedreich's Ataxia.

On Friday morning, Katie walked into the downtown Macy's and got quite the surprise. A red carpet welcome for Katie, her sister Allie and her parents.

Make-A-Wish and Macy's teamed up for the big surprise.

FOX 12 was there as Katie went on a scavenger hunt for things she could use during her trip to Hawaii.

Katie's eyes lit up at each place she stopped during the scavenger hunt.

"It was fun to receive all the gifts and go around and have fun," said Katie.

"She got diagnosed a year and a half ago with Friedreich's Ataxia, and it takes a toll on the family. You try and stay positive. So for Make-A-Wish to come along and grant her wish, along with Macy's, it's incredible," said Heather Snead, Katie's mom.

Katie even had a chance to write a letter to Santa, in Macy's Santa Land.

Katie's illness affects her muscles, and swimming brings her a lot of relief. As part of her wish, she will swim with dolphins when she's in Hawaii.
