New day center for the homeless opens in Vancouver

VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A new day center is looking to help Vancouver's homeless population.

Under a current city ban, those living on the streets are only allowed to pitch their tents for a night.

Friends of the Carpenter and Share want to give those people a place to go during the day.

The new day center comes with laundry, showers, clothing and snacks.

The Grand Opening was hosted on Friday.

FOX 12 talked with the director of programs to see what else the center offers.

"These are the essential services we all need having: clean, dry clothes, hygiene products, being aware of your access to a shelter, having access to chemical dependency services and other counseling services. This is all what's going to help people be healthy and be able help the access housing," said Amy Reynolds.

Reynolds told us one of the most requested amenities was a safe, secure place to charge a cellphone.
