DEQ warns of hazards in floodwater coming from submerged cars

Posted: Updated:
SHERWOOD, OR (KPTV) -

There's a new problem from the week’s flooding in the metro area as oil and fluids from submerged cars are contaminating water.

The Department of Environmental Quality is investigating the Sherwood Pick-N-Pull, a car yard where people can buy parts from old cars.

Light oil has been spotted floating on the water nearby. Experts call that "sheen" and it can be a hazard to wildlife.

Because the floodwater in the lot is moving, it is too dangerous for crews to go in and remove the oil.

DEQ officials say if anyone see machines or oil drums in the water, they are asked to report it.
