Kalama man gets to experience mudslides, tornado and traffic all in a week

KALAMA, WA (KPTV) -

One man from Kalama had a particularly tough week, going from one disaster to the next.

Mike West lives in along Kalama River Road, and his home was one of many cut off after mudslides hit the area.

Since he could not get to his house, he decided to go to his parent's home in Battle Ground.

But after the tornado hit there Thursday, West was stuck again.

When he was able to go home that night, the normally 30 minute drive took him four hours.

West said the storm highlighted what so many take for granted.

“You know we go about our lives taking a lot of things for granted and one of them is transportation,” he said. “Had I not known the back roads and the way to get here without going on I-5, I might have been longer getting here."

West said neither his home nor his parent's home in Battle Ground were damaged.
