Firefighters rescue stranded dog along surging Willamette River

Posted: Updated:

Portland firefighters came to the rescue of a stranded pooch near the Sellwood Bridge Saturday afternoon.

They got the call at 3:30 PM after someone in a boat noticed a dog in distress along the west bank of the Willamette River.

Crews first responded by truck but couldn't get to the dog because of very steep and dangerous terrain and high river levels

So a rescue boat was called in and as they got closer the dog began to bark.

Firefighter Gary Grey started calling to the dog and after several minutes managed to coax it close enough to be pulled safely aboard.

The dog was wet and cold but otherwise okay and released to animal control. It's unknown who the dog belongs to.
