Cyclist killed by hit and run driver on Lombard; possible suspect in custody

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Officers responded at 8:38 p.m. to a report of a cyclist down in the street in the 4200 block of Northeast Portland Highway.

Responding medics found a male victim in the street and were unable to save him and he died at the scene.

After investigation, police learned that the bicyclist, a 38-year-old male was riding eastbound on Portland Highway when he was struck from behind by a blue 2000 Ford Crown Victoria.

Police said the bicyclist had rear flashing light on his bicycle.

The suspect drove away from the scene, and one man was later taken into custody after police found the vehicle at northeast 97th Avenue and Killingsworth.

Kenneth Britt Smith Jr. faces multiple charges, including manslaughter in the second degree and criminally negligent homicide.
