WEST LINN, OR (KPTV) -

The West Linn Police Department arrested six people after they used stolen credit cards to purchase gift cards.

Police said the group used the credit cards on Nov. 29 at a Safeway in West Linn. They then left West Linn but were spotted in Oregon City attempting the same crime.

Officers set up on I-205 north and southbound in hopes of locating the suspects.

While officers were waiting, a West Linn officer conducting the initial investigation at the Safeway found that the group had purchased $11,379.91 in Apple gift cards on stolen credit cards.

Around 12:45 p.m. the suspects vehicle was spotted by officers on I-205 northbound near Highway 213.

Police said officers followed the vehicle north until sufficient resources were in place to take the suspects into custody.

Officers stopped the suspects vehicle at 12:52 p.m. on I-205 northbound near the Johnson Creek Blvd exit. The stop temporary closed I-205 north for about 30 minutes.

Officers arrested Ramadan A. Ahmed, 20, Filmont T. Matewos, 22, Yosief B. Tesfamariam, 23, Abdurhaman M. Hussein, 20, and Sharmarke K. Abib, 21. A juvenile female was also taken into custody.

Police said all suspects are from the Seattle area.

All six suspects were charged with aggravated theft I, organized retail theft, aggravated identity theft, criminal possession of a forged instrument, and fraudulent use of a credit card.

Abib was charged with an additional felony warrant from Washington.

Investigators have determined that there were 110 victims whose credit card information had been stolen. The victims are from Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, New Jersey, Texas, Colorado, and Wisconsin.

The group purchased gift cards from stores in Corvallis, Salem, Portland, West Linn, Lake Oswego, Oregon City and Seattle over a two day period of time.

Police said the group attempted to purchase over $52,000 in gift cards but were only successful in getting $26,000. All of the gift cards from the metro area thefts have been recovered.
