Bus route construction hindering downtown Vancouver business

Posted: Updated:
VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

Construction is currently underway in Vancouver to accommodate a new rapid bus route, but some local business owners say it's killing their Christmas rush.

This is the month that a lot of small business owners wait for and count on to make their biggest sales of the year.

The owner of one store in Vancouver said this new construction is blocking customers from being able to come in.

Reshell Douglas owns the Not Too Shabby boutique on East 16th and Broadway in Vancouver. This is usually her busiest time of year, but last week, workers shut down her street and started tearing up the road.

It's all in preparation for The Vine, a new rapid bus system that C-TRAN officials say will increase ridership and run more frequently.

Reshell says she knew the project was on the horizon, but she's angry that it started at such a crucial time for small businesses.  She says walk-in shoppers don't know she's here and her regulars drive by and think she's closed.

Reshell asked C-TRAN and the developer if they could hold off on the work until after Christmas, but she says both agencies told her there's nothing they can do.

"Obviously, I make a large amount of my sales during the December holiday season and it just seems a little inconsiderate and there wasn't a lot of consideration made," said Reshell.

FOX 12 reached out to C-TRAN officials and they released a statement saying:

C-TRAN understands that the construction in downtown Vancouver has been difficult for some business owners, particularly during the holidays. The Bus Rapid Transit project is large enough that construction will occur for over a year, making it unavoidable to skip a holiday season. C-TRAN is in touch with businesses regularly to navigate challenges as they occur.
