A Portland judge has been given a big national honor. It's an award considered the equivalent to the Nobel Peace Prize for judges.

Ninth Circuit Senior Judge Edward Leavy was given the award, and on Tuesday, there was a big celebration to honor him and his nearly 60-year career.

Judge Leavy's chambers are in the Pioneer Courthouse. He is now 86-years-old and has served for 58 years in both state and federal courts.

Judge Leavy is this years Devitt Distinguished Service to Justice Award recipient. A committee of federal judges selected him as the winner.

This is the highest federal honor a judge can receive.

Judge Leavy is known for his mediation skills and for settling numerous high-profile criminal cases.

The award was handed out during a ceremony at the Supreme Court last month, but on Tuesday, friends, family and colleagues in Portland gathered to honor him.

The ceremony included a limerick, a special gift from a colleague, and a message from the president of his alma mater, University of Portland.

"Edward Leavy is a man who personifies the Universities mission of inspiring action in the world and who most of all exemplifies how to humbly live a life of faith of service," said University of Portland President Mark Poorman.

The Devitt Award was established in 1982 and Judge Leavy is the 36th judge to receive the honor.
