Family safe after fire rips through Corbett home

Posted: Updated:

A Corbett family is safe after their home caught fire Tuesday afternoon, destroying the second floor and leaving extensive smoke and water damage throughout.

The fire started around 4:30 p.m. at a home on SE Groce Road.

A family member told Fox 12 off-camera two adults and three kids were home at the time, but they all made it out safely.

“The first thing I heard were some explosions,” neighbor Jim Scheller told Fox 12, adding that the noise could have been propane tanks going up or wood beams bursting in the heat.  “It must have really been going.  We didn’t realize how big the fire was.”

The Scheller's went to call 911, but said fire trucks were already responding.  A fire station is just about a mile from the rural home.

The office of the Oregon State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause, and a spokesperson for Corbett Fire said the investigator will need to return in the daylight.

“The flames were right up at the top of the trees,” Scheller’s wife, Christine, added.  “Their property is right against our property,  and if it got caught up any more, we could have had fire coming our way, so it was like, ‘What’s going on?’”

Clackamas and Sandy Fire both assisted Corbett Fire due to the rural location and size of the fire.  Firefighters say the home is roughly 4,500 square feet.

Because there are no fire hydrants in the area, crews set up a portable holding tank to store water on site.

The recent rain helped keep the fire from spreading into the trees and potentially to other homes.

Crews will remain on scene throughout the night to monitor hot spots as they continue to flare up.
