MILWAUKIE, OR (KPTV) -

A local veteran is pushing to make a big difference for local homeless veterans.

Tina Kennedy recently retired as a 1st sergeant in the U.S. Army only to come home to Milwaukie and see how many veterans are currently homeless.

Kennedy is now working on raising money for a shelter, called Fort Kennedy. The transitional shelter would be able to house as many as 60 homeless veterans and their families.

On Wednesday, Kennedy put together Christmas stockings to hand out to the homeless veterans.

"I've taken care of soldiers my whole career. So, I'm taking care of the veterans that are homeless and need someone," said Kennedy. "We did a drive of just socks and underwear it was called Box and Sox. Cause when I asked my vets one thing they needed they said underwear and socks."

If you would like to support and donate to Fort Kennedy, a GoFundMe account has been set up.
