PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A sinkhole has shut down Southwest Hamilton Street between Southwest 39th Avenue and 40th Avenue in Portland.

The Portland Bureau of Environmental Services said Thursday that a corrugated metal pipe under the street has failed, creating the sinkhole.

The street will be closed for up to six weeks while crews replace the pipe.

Eastbound traffic is detoured around the closure at Southwest 45th Avenue and westbound traffic is detoured at Dosch Road.

Construction hours will be 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and possibly Saturdays.

Southwest Hamilton Street is closed to through traffic 24 hours a day until repairs are complete.

The failed pipe carries flow from a Fanno Creek tributary. Work crews are using pumps to pipe stream flow around the work area during repairs.
