SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

A Salem man who decapitated his mother's cat with a kitchen knife was sentenced to four years in prison.

Rudy Espinoza, 25, pleaded guilty Thursday to charges of first-degree animal abuse and delivery of Methylenedioxymethamphetamine, also known as MDMA or ecstasy.

Deputies responded to the 4600 block of Shawnee Lane in June on reports that Espinoza had knocked on a neighbor's door while covered in blood and wearing only boxers.

Deputies noted he had scratches and bite marks on his body.

Investigators said a cat was then found decapitated with its tail broken. A probable cause affidavit states Espinoza used a kitchen knife to kill the cat.

When asked why he did it, the Marion County Sheriff's Office reported that Espinoza told officers, "because it is evil and nosy."

Family members told detectives they believed he killed the cat to cause his mother pain, according to court documents.

A search warrant was then served on Espinoza's bedroom in the home he shares with his mother. Deputies said he was subsequently charged in connection to the discovery of MDMA.

After pleading guilty Thursday, Espinoza was sentenced to 28 months in prison on the drug charge and 24 months for animal abuse. The judge ordered the sentences to run consecutively.
