Drivers near the Gorge dealing with snowy roads

Posted: Updated:

While the metro area has been dealing with heavy rain Thursday, it was a snowy mess for morning travelers in the Gorge.

The message Thursday night from the Hood River County Sheriff's Office was to enjoy the snow at home.

Though the fresh snowfall made for a gorgeous morning, motorists found hitting the road was dangerous, even with snow tires, chains and careful driving.

Jesse Meadows loves the snow, but as a truck driver he knows what it takes to drive in the Gorge during conditions like this.

“It can be treacherous. The main roads are decent but once you get off the main roads around here there are hills and everything else it can get really sketchy,” he said.

Instead of hitting the road, Meadows was home in Hood River shoveling, avoiding the traffic on I-84, where he can get nervous.

“It's one of the most dangerous sections of road I've ever driven,” he said. “I've had two experiences this year that I've almost wrecked, and it's real dangerous between everybody else, just the speeds and the road itself.”

Hood River County deputies did note that everyone should have an emergency kit ready with a flashlight, blankets, water and non-perishable food in their car, just in case of emergency in this weather.

They also said that this time of year it was important to travel with studded tires or chains in case there are restrictions on the roads.
