Hwy 30 reopened after landslide, high water closes road

Posted: Updated:
RAINIER, OR (KPTV) -

Highway 30 is now open again after the Oregon Department of Transportation was forced to close all lanes Thursday due to large landslide near Rainier.

Geologists said saturated hillsides likely caused the slide. They added that most hillsides around the area cannot handle the runoff.

Several areas of the highway suffered problems Thursday.

High water forced crews to close part of the road near Saltzman Road..

ODOT also closed one lane Highway 30 near Bridge Avenue after a large rock came down onto the roadway. Crews later removed the rock.

These problems come after a much bigger slide closed part of the highway last week near the St. Johns Bridge.

Experts said the areas most at-risk for landslides are those spots where slides have occurred in the past.

ODOT crews are continuously checking the area for threats.
