A woman and a dog were killed when a large landslide slammed into homes in the Florence area early Friday morning.

The landslide hit two homes with dirt, trees and other debris on Santa Road near Mercer Lake Road at 3:15 a.m. Friday.

One of the homes had two people and two dogs inside. Firefighters said a woman and a dog were found dead at the scene.

The woman was identified by deputies as 70-year-old Delores Miller.

Miller's husband escaped with injuries described as minor and called 911. The second dog was rescued by Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue crews and was not injured.

Delores and Gary Miller have owned Aloha Garbage and Recycling for more than 40 years.

A former neighbor described Delores Miller as a loving mother and a kind neighbor. Cindi Campbell grew up across the street from the Millers and returned to the neighborhood to raise her own family.

"My first Christmas here Delores came over with a Christmas present for my 1 ½-year-old April, who is now 26. It was a porcelain doll which we will always treasure," Campbell said.

The second home hit by the landslide was unoccupied.

Lane County officials are working to assess the damage, which was described as significant.

Mercer Lake Road was closed for safety reasons at Milepost 2. The road was fully reopened by 3:45 p.m.

Another landslide in Newport on Thursday night damaged at least five homes and caused a natural gas leak.
