PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A woman babysitting a 4-year-old girl took the child out panhandling, "because she knows she will make more money if she has a child with her," according a probable cause affidavit.

Danielle Sanchez, 19, was arrested Thursday on the charge of first-degree criminal mistreatment.

According to court documents, police were called to the Grocery Outlet store on the 4400 block of Northeast Hancock Street on Thursday on reports of a woman and child walking the aisles asking customers for food or money.

An employee told police the child's shoes were soaked and that she was dragging a wet coat along the floor. A probable cause affidavit states an employee purchased a sandwich for the girl and a hamburger for the woman.

The affidavit states the woman told an officer that she was kicked out of her home by her mother on Thanksgiving and had been living on the streets with her daughter in a tent ever since.

When asked about the child's date of birth and last name, court documents state Sanchez was unable to provide either, saying, "I'm just so freaked out, I'm drawing a blank."

After several attempts, Sanchez provided a last name and date of birth for the girl, according to court documents, and said she had another child who was previously removed by the Department of Human Services.

The court documents state she was unable to provide a date of birth for that child.

When the officer called DHS to verify Sanchez's information, he was told they had no record of Sanchez being a mother to any children.

A probable cause affidavit states Sanchez then told the officer that the girl was not her biological daughter, but claimed she was caring for her because the girl's mother is a drug addict.

Sanchez was unable to give any information about the biological mother, however, the affidavit states.

Upon further questioning, court documents state Sanchez admitted that Bella is her friend's child and that she was babysitting her.

Sanchez said she lied to customers in Grocery Outlet about not having eaten that day, as they had food bought for them at Panera Bread earlier in the day, according to court documents.

Sanchez told police this was the first time she had taken this child panhandling, but said she had taken another child out "like ten times," court documents state.

According to a probable cause affidavit, when officers contacted the girl's mother, she told police Sanchez was a friend and that Sanchez babysat on occasion to help out.

The girl's mother told police she was unaware that Sanchez was using her daughter to panhandle and did not know that Sanchez was panhandling at all.

Sanchez was arraigned Friday and is due back in court Dec. 29.
