Salem homeowner who used bait package to catch thieves talks to Fox 12

The holiday season brings out package thieves looking to steal presents from front porches. One Salem man was so fed up, he took matters into his own hands and caught a thief on camera

"The first time we thought we missed the packages or there's something wrong that went through," said Abdullah Ibrahim.

The third time someone stole a package from his Salem home was the last straw.

"I felt very sorry for my wife," said Ibrahim. "Her last package was the one that got stolen. She paid a lot of money on it."

Ibrahim installed security cameras and lights. His wife Ashlee decided to leave out a box packed with clothes destined to be donated to see what would happen.

Then they waited, until Thursday morning when security cameras captured a woman taking the box from their porch. She is seen loading it onto a wagon and walking off.  A person pushing a full shopping cart is seen trailing behind her.

"They were pushing a cart, so it looks they were actually going and looking at every single house and seeing if there's something available for them," said Ibrahim.

His security cameras sent an alert to his cellphone right away, so he called 911. Marion County deputies located two suspects within minutes. They arrested 40-year-old Eva Duke and 26-year-old Paige Butler on charges of theft and trespassing.

It was a result Ibrahim hoped for but did not entirely expect.

"I got to say I was very excited and very surprised how … I'm not even in my house and they managed to catch these thieves and bring justice to us," he said.

If you are expecting any package deliveries, the Marion County Sheriff's Office recommends you take some extra measures to prevent theft: request a signature for delivery, ask for the delivery to come when you know you'll be home or consider having the packages sent somewhere else.

Ibrahim recommends having packages delivered to your work.
