PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Three gold coins were donated to the Salvation Army in three separate kettles in Portland on Friday.

The coins were discovered over the weekend and are valued at about $1,500 each.

The Salvation Army said the coins could not have come at a better time since there are only a few days until Christmas and kettles are behind due to the weather and a shortened holiday season.

"We are touched by the generosity of our community," said Major Nancy Dihle, Portland Metro Coordinator for The Salvation Army. "They have answered our call and need for support this Christmas. We serve over 90,000 individuals on average each year throughout the Portland Metro area, and this will be a significant help to meet this need."

The Salvation Army is still collecting donations. You can make a donations by visiting a kettle in your community or click here.

Kettles can be found at participating Fred Meyer, Safeway, Albertson's, JCPenney, Macy's, Walmart, BigLots, Bi-Mart, Fry's Electronics, QFC's, Hobby Lobby, Shopko, and Walgreen's locations across the Portland Metro area.
