Landslide threat worsens at Oregon City apartments; more evacuations ordered

Posted: Updated:

The landslide threat near Oregon City apartments has worsened in recent days, leading to additional evacuation orders.

The city declared a state of emergency due to landslide activity that began on Dec. 14 around the 14000 block of South Beavercreek Road.

The city already evacuated units 20 through 29 at Berryhill Townhouses and Apartments. On Tuesday, city workers also deemed four buildings as being threatened at Forest Edge Apartments.

Per city code, people living in lower section buildings 8, 9, 10 and 11 are required to evacuate by 5 p.m. Thursday.

"It's not good, it's just all happening right before holiday season, it's one of the worst things I could think of and it's incredibly stressful," said Derek Brueggeman.

City workers previously recommended people relocate from those buildings at Forest Edge Apartments, but a mandatory evacuation notice was not issued until Tuesday.

"It's hard having to evacuate everything. The landlord should have done stuff on the Friday it actually happened, you know, our family could have been out safer and sooner," said Amanda Peach.

Recent landslide activity has occurred close to those buildings and near the only evacuation route from the lower section of the apartment complex, according to a report from Oregon City inspectors.

The sewer line and storm water line have been compromised by the slide activity forcing the city to shut off the water line to the lower complex for health concerns.

A temporary shelter has been opened up at the Oregon City High School. Temporary shuttle buses are available to those without available transportation.

Evacuees are being advised to collect essential and necessary items such as medical products, financial and legal documents, pets and services animals.
