Three trees crash into Kelso home with family inside

KELSO, WA (KPTV) -

As more rain moves in Tuesday night, many are still cleaning up major messes and damage caused by Monday's wind storm.

While a lot of people are finishing their Christmas shopping, the Birkholz family in Kelso are just starting a major clean-up effort, after three cedar trees came crashing down on their house.

"It just came right through the roof," said Vicki Birkholz.

Vicki's sons were at the kitchen table just five minutes before the trees fell.

"If they would've been sitting there, they would've been hurt pretty bad, if not killed. We're just really thankful that we're all OK."

This is the second major blow to the Birkholz' in the last two weeks.

During recent flooding, the culvert behind their house clogged up, forcing Fish Pond Creek to cut a new path. That path washed out their private road, which is not covered by insurance.

"We almost have to put the creek back in its bed, where it was. So we're thinking $10,000, maybe. So it's been...it's been quite a month."

Vicki and her sons are taking everything one step at a time, and they say they still have plenty to celebrate on Friday.

"The Grinch can take our presents, we're still going to have Christmas."
