Last-minute shoppers brave malls, grocery stores, freeways

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

‘Tis the season for hustle and bustle.

Christmas Eve is almost here, and if you’ve been anywhere in the Portland metro area lately – the mall, the freeway, the grocery store – you know it’s been a madhouse.

“I tried going to Cedar Mills and literally sat in one spot in a lane in the mall for almost 40 minutes,” shopper Teresa Kawaguchi told Fox 12.

Luckily, Kawaguchi is done with her big Christmas shopping.

Wednesday afternoon, she was on the hunt for some last-minute table decorations at the Fred Meyer on SW Walker & 158th in Beaverton – another spot crammed with people.

Kawaguchi said she normally isn’t a last-minute shopper:

“That’s why I’m kicking myself today – the day before Christmas Eve!” she said, laughing.

She wasn’t alone.

Parking spots and short check-out lines seemed to be at a premium Wednesday throughout the metro area as holiday traffic piled up in a sea of brake lights on area freeways.

“I drove home from Corvallis today,” Blake Gjesdal told Fox 12.  “It normally takes an hour and a half, but it took two.”

There is an upside if you’re just now checking your loved ones off your list: many stores offer their best deals of the season in the days leading up to Christmas.

But if there’s one thing you want to ask Santa for? It may be patience.
