Families evacuated due to landslide concerns remain positive during the holidays

Posted: Updated:

This month’s heavy rains have been destructive, forcing people out of their homes during the holidays.

Residents in ten units at the Berryhill Townhouses and Apartments in Oregon City had to evacuate because of a landslide.

Now, four buildings at the nearby Forest Edge Apartments have been evacuated as well.

Because of the evacuation orders, 25 people spent Christmas Day at Oregon City High School, where the Red Cross has set up a shelter.

Heat Cannon is staying at the shelter with her four children. She said some of the families have been so busy dealing with the evacuation that they forgot about Christmas altogether.

"We're still trying to settle in and there's so many things that we have to do that you kind of get off schedule, so people at the last minute were like 'Oh yeah we better get some presents in here for the kids'," said Cannon

Dozens of volunteers also spent their holidays at the shelter as well, making sure the families are taken care of.

"They've been very kind to us. We get meals, snacks, someplace to sleep that is warm and they're all very friendly here," Cannon said.

Even with all of the help, families are still in limbo, unsure of what they will do next.

Cannon says she does not plan on going back to the old apartment.

For now, families are choosing to focus on the good things, and remain positive during the holiday season.

“We still have family which at least for me is really important because knowing that they're safe is a Christmas blessing to me," sad Laurissa Woodbury.

As a reminder if you would like to help, the Red Cross is not accepting donations for this response, but they are coordinating with community partners to help the families affected.

Donations can be made at any fire station for the Clackamas County Fire Department District 1. Also, a landslide relief fund has been set up at the Lewis and Clark Bank on Mcloughlin Boulevard in Oregon City.
