Police say 2015 breaks record for gang violence in Portland

Posted: Updated:

Three gang-related shootings in the final days of 2015 have made for a violent end to an already record-breaking year for gang violence in Portland, according to police.

Portland police said this is the most violent year they’ve seen since keeping track of Portland’s gang shootings in 2001. This weekend’s shootings brings the year’s running total to 183 gang-related violent crimes this year.

Portland police say of those 183 violent crimes most of them were shootings. In 2014, there were 109 violent crimes, according to police.

That means officers were called out to 74 more incidents so far this year.

Overnight Saturday, investigators were called out to Northeast 148th and Halsey where they found evidence of gunfire, but no any victims. Witnesses said they saw gunfire come from one car toward another car.

A bit later, police said a 23-year-old man showed up at the hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound. Police said he’s a known gang associate who did not cooperate with their investigation.

Then around 3 a.m., there was another shooting at North Haight and Fremont. Police said several parked cars were damaged by bullets and a bullet flew through a children’s playroom of a nearby house. Fortunately no one was hurt.

The family who lives there tells FOX 12 they heard the shots, but didn’t realize a bullet came into the playroom until the next morning. They said the bullet flew into the home at child-level and shattered a picture frame.

The third shooting happened around 5 a.m. Officers were called to the 2700 block of Northeast Saratoga Street, after a 911 caller claimed someone fired numerous rounds from a handgun toward them. Police said they found evidence of gunfire and a parked car with bullet damage, but no known victims.

Police said it’s unclear if the weekend shootings are connected.
