Clackamas Co. Sheriff's deputies play "Secret Santa"

Christmas has come and gone, but some "Secret Santas" in Clackamas County made some surprise visits just before the holiday.

Knocking on doors and handing over cash. It was the idea of a couple generous community members, and sheriff's deputies were enlisted to play Santa Claus.

A video was released on Twitter showing Clackamas Co. Sheriff's Deputies making the holidays a little happier for some local families.

"The kids answered the door and they were wondering why I was there. They had met me before and so they recognized me, and when mom came to the door, she was just thrilled," said Deputy Laree Wolfe.

Deputy Wolfe was part of the department's Secret Santa detail, passing out $100 bills to families who they'd met that they thought could use a little help this holiday season.

"Being a single mother of like five children, she said the money was going to help her a lot."

The money came from two community members who wanted to remain anonymous. They asked the Sheriff's Department to find good homes for it.

"I think it just gives us an opportunity to build the relationships with the community and to show that, you know, underneath this uniform we all have hearts and that we care about the people we interact with on a daily basis."

A small, but meaningful gesture Wolfe and her fellow deputies hope made a difference.

"I think it's easy to forget there are families out there that don't spend Christmas like other families. Any little bit to help, you know, even if it's just one gift or maybe to put some food on the table for Christmas dinner. A small gift goes a long way."

Deputy Wolfe said all of the families they visited were very grateful, and she was just happy to play a part in all of it.
