Crews clear debris, reopen Germantown Road

The Portland Bureau of Transportation reopened Germantown Road early Tuesday morning from Skyline Boulevard to Highway 30 after icy conditions and downed trees forced crews to close the road earlier in the week.

Portland transportation officials said the road cleared up much quicker than they thought it would and crews were able to open it earlier than expected.

Sunday’s snowy conditions, downed trees and abandoned cars forced crews to close the road Sunday night.

Crews spent most of the day Monday clearing the road of debris, but officials originally suspected freezing temperatures would have kept the road closed through Tuesday’s morning commute.

With colder conditions and perhaps a few snowflakes expected this week, the Portland Bureau of Transportation warns drivers to use caution.

"Anyone choosing to drive at high elevations in Portland during winter weather is encouraged to use caution, slow down, allow three times the normal distance to brake and stop safely, use headlights and share the road responsibly," a bureau release states.

Roads could still be a little icy up in the higher elevations so drive carefully.
