Eviction signs for homeless campers spark protests

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Many people can be seen throughout Portland camping near overpasses and roadways.

But several homeless people camping in southeast Portland are being told to leave.

The Oregon Department of Transportation recently posted eviction signs throughout the area.

The signs tell campers they have 24 hours to pack up and leave.

The eviction signs have caused several locals to protest in support for the homeless.

Sammy Black of Portland Tenants United hopes that the protests will stop the sweep of the area.

“It seems like they are less likely to sweep if we show up in mass to help defend them,” he said. “They have nowhere to go so what’s the point in destroying the last few things they have?”

Portland Tenants United said they are planning a rally in front of Portland City Hall on January 15.
