Deputies identified the 48-year-old woman whose body was found in a Hood River hiking area as a victim of a suspected murder-suicide involving her estranged husband.

Wendy Hildreth's death was ruled a homicide due to blunt force trauma, according to the Hood River County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies believe she was killed by her estranged husband, 58-year-old Michael Hildreth, who also took his own life.

Wendy Hildreth, 48, was reported missing after not showing up for work Tuesday morning.

Further investigation revealed that Wendy Hildreth had recently sought a restraining order against her husband and they were in the process of divorcing.

Detectives responded to the 4300 block of Wooded Acres Drive just before 10 a.m. Tuesday and discovered blood outside her home. A search of the property led to the discovery of Michael Hildreth's body in a detached shop building near the house.

Deputies said his death was an apparent suicide.

On Monday, deputies said a trail of blood in the snow near the Family Man Staging Area in Hood River led to the discovery of a woman's body about a quarter-mile north of the parking lot.

Following an autopsy, she was identified by investigators Tuesday evening as Wendy Hildreth.

Deputies said evidence recovered from the Family Man Staging Area scene was consistent with evidence discovered at the home of Wendy Hildreth.

A Subaru found in her carport had traces of blood both inside and out, according to detectives. The car was missing several parts, and investigators said those parts were found at the recreational area crime scene.

"The investigation is ongoing; however all evidence points towards a case of murder/suicide. The Hildreths' children have been accounted for and notified of the circumstances," a Hood River County Sheriff's Office release states.

Deputies are asking anyone who may have information about the murder or the Hildreths' recent relationship to contact the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office.
