CORBETT, OR (KPTV) -

For the first time in weeks, it seems the Portland metro area saw a break from the rain. But with those clear skies come cold nights and strong winds in the days ahead.

At the Vista House in the Columbia River Gorge, wind gusts peaked at 51 miles per hour and are expected to pick up later. But, that didn’t seem to stop anyone from getting out and enjoying the clear day.

“It’s very brisk, we probably should have started our day here and we wouldn’t have needed our morning coffee,” said visitor Michele Lagueux. “It’s a fantastic time, I haven’t seen any snow yet so this is beautiful.”

“We just came to look at the scenery and to see something pretty since it’s sunny for once,” said visitor Erica Fox.

“It’s freezing and gorgeous,” said visitor Tabitha Jungck. “The sky is a brilliant blue and you can see so much from this vantage point.”

Winds are forecast to pick up Wednesday night and into Thursday, with the strongest gusts expected to hit the Gorge on New Year’s Day.
