(KPTV) -

You may have noticed a different kind of traffic light popping up around the metro area at crosswalks.

The HAWK signals, such as the one located on Hall Boulevard and Greenway Parkway in Beaverton, were installed as part of an effort to reduce the number of crashes involving pedestrians.

However, there has been so much confusion about what to do at them that the Beaverton Police Department posted a public service announcement on their Facebook page Wednesday explaining how they work.

Just to be clear, if the red lights are flashing and the car in front of you drives off, you still need to stop like a stop sign before you press the gas.
