Police charged star TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin with felony assault of a police officer stemming from a bar fight early Thursday and he was suspended for this weekend's Alamo Bowl game against No. 15 Oregon.

The decision by coach Gary Patterson effectively ends Boykin's college career, since he is a senior.

Patterson said Boykin and junior wide receiver Preston Miller were suspended for Saturday's game due to a violation of team rules that he did not specify.

"We are disappointed in their actions and apologize to the TCU Horned Frogs Nation, Valero Alamo Bowl and city of San Antonio," the coach said.

San Antonio Police spokesman Sgt. Jesse Salame said Boykin was being held on $5,000 bond. The Bexar County Magistrate's website showed Boykin was arrested at 1:45 a.m.

A police report said the 22-year-old Boykin was fighting with employees at a bar, but people he was with told officers they would take him back to his hotel.

Police said Boykin then charged at responding officers and swung at one before he was taken to the ground. The report also said Boykin resisted arrest until he was told they would use a stun gun on him.

Boykin opened the season as a favorite for the Heisman Trophy but injuries and a midseason loss to Oklahoma State took some momentum out of the Horned Frogs. Still, he passed for 3,575 yards and 31 touchdowns this season as 11th-ranked TCU (10-2, 7-2 Big 12) got to 10 wins for the 10th time in the past 14 seasons under coach Gary Patterson.

Boykin played in the regular-season finale against Baylor, his first action since turning his right ankle awkwardly in the first half of TCU's last home game, Nov. 14 against Kansas.
