FOX 12's Most Wanted steals Portland man's pizza delivery rig while on the job

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

FOX 12’s Most Wanted swiped a pizza delivery guy’s car while he was on the job, leaving him lying in the road.

Shannon Smith said he was making a delivery to a regular customer who lives off Southeast 145th Avenue on December 23 when the theft occurred.

Smith said his car was no more than 50 feet away from the customer's front door, so he thought it would be safe to leave the car running.

Unfortunately, that didn’t turn out to be the case.

Once he realized what was going on, Smith said he tried to run after the thief, but lost his footing and fell.

“I’m lying on the ground in a puddle on the side of the road watching my truck drive off,” he said. “It’s the way I make a living with my truck. It would mean a lot to me to get it back in useable condition. Our truck is part of the family, we really like that truck.”

Unfortunately, Smith said he didn’t get a good look at the thief.

His car is a black 1996 4-door Chevrolet Blazer with the license plate UUW761. Smith said it was decorated with Christmas lights for holiday deliveries.

Smith said he was able to borrow a car in the meantime from a friend so he’s still able to work, but ultimately he’ll need to buy a replacement car if he doesn’t get the Blazer back.

At this point, Smith says he doesn’t care who took the car or why they did it. He just wants it back, no questions asked.

Supporters of the family, including some of Smith's regular customers, have started a GoFundMe page to help with the search or with replacement costs.

Anyone with any information on the theft is asked to give Portland police a call.
