NORTH PLAINS, OR (KPTV) -

Washington County deputies have arrested a man accused of hitting a gas station attendant with a motor home in order to steal $40 worth of gas.

Deputies were called to the ARCO station on Northwest Glencoe Road and the edge of Hillsboro and North Plains just after 8;00 p.m. Thursday, after a 2014 Ford Coachman drove off after getting gas, not paying, then striking an attendant and injuring his hand as the vehicle fled.

“The RV sped up, the cashier was getting close to the car and the RV actually drove right into, veered into him, and hit the cashier,” said Rick Correa, a customer at the gas station.

Correa said he knows the cashier because he’s a regular customer at the station and it spurred him into action.

“I mean, it could have killed him. It happened right in front of me. I had my car on, so I’m thinking, alright well, I’ve got to call the police. I’ve got to do something.”

Correa drove after the motor home west on Highway 26, and then into North Plains.

Correa said the driver of the motor home backed into Correa's Porsche Boxster on purpose to stop him from following.

Deputies took over the chase.

They say the driver and his accomplice, a woman, ditched the motor home on NW Dairy Creek Road..

A K-9 unit was able to track down the passenger, 33-year-old Jennelle Dunn, before finding the driver, Reiner Schmolling, 38, in the woods a mile away.

Deputies determined the motor home had been stolen earlier in the week, and was returned to the rightful owner after processing.

Schmolling was taken to the Washington County Jail, and faces charges including second degree robbery, third and fourth degree assault, attempt to elude, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and felony hit and run. He was held on a $250,000 bail.

Schmolling has a long criminal history, including shooting a Washington County deputy and killing a Hillsboro police K-9 back in 1997.

Dunn was also sent to the jail. She is facing charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and unlawful possession of oxycodone and is being held on $10,000 bail.
