Shoppers stock up as winter weather hits

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

As Portland woke up to a snow-covered Sunday, shoppers began stocking up for the winter storm.

At Grocery Outlet in Beaverton, workers said the short notice ahead of the storm may have led to fewer customers.

“Usually in retail when we get a warning well in advance people will flock to the grocery store and buy anything you can think of, especially wood and different items, to prepare for the snow storm,” store employee Sergio Soto said. “But it seems like with this one we didn't have much of a notice.”

Customers were going to area hardware stores like Home Depot to buy tools to help them clean up from the snow.

Store staff said shoppers were picking up shovels, de-icer and ice scrapers, but one kind of product was harder to find for anyone not in stores early Sunday.

“We got some sleds in here this year,” Xy Carson, operations manager at Home Depot, explained. “That's kind of a new product for us, but we already sold out this morning. The kids were in here early.”
