A teen is facing the charge of attempted murder for attacking a 59-year-old woman who was walking her dog on a Tigard street, according to police.

Officers responded to Walnut Street and 114th Avenue at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Police said a passing driver and passenger saw two people who appeared to be in a confrontation. They turned around to see what was happening and they found a woman who had been injured, while another person ran away from the scene.

The passenger stayed with the woman and called 911, while the driver followed the suspect. The suspect was seen running between two homes near Southwest 122nd Court and Katherine Street.

The driver sought help from a nearby homeowner who called police and provided details about their location.

A Tigard Police Department K-9 was called out and searched for the suspect. K-9 Baxter tracked down the suspect hiding in some brush, according to officers.

Daniel Alfredo Ortiz, 17, of Tigard, was taken into custody. He was arraigned in court Monday on Measure 11 charges of attempted murder and first-degree assault, as well as the charge of unlawful use of a weapon.

After his arrest, police continued to search the area for evidence. A K-9 located a kitchen-type knife that detectives believe was the weapon used in the attack.

The victim sustained serious injuries and remained in the hospital Monday.

Police said the woman had never met the teen prior to the attack. A Tigard Police Department spokesman said stranger-to-stranger crimes are rare in Tigard.

A possible motive for the attack was not released.
