Local taxi companies extra busy due to icy conditions

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Many people couldn't stay home on Monday but didn't want to drive in the ice, which meant local taxi companies were extra busy.

Union Cab and Radio Cab were slammed with requests for rides on Monday. The general manager of Radio Cab told FOX 12 this happens during every ice storm.

Sheets of ice covered Portland streets this morning, after freezing rain fell Sunday night.

Dispatchers at Radio Cab were busy fielding calls all day. Many of the calls were from people who didn't want to risk driving or walking in the slick conditions.

Cab drivers were busy Sunday night as well. One driver said he helped a lot of people get home.

"I saw a lot of cars parked along the edge of the road, they weren't able to drive at all. A lot of people called me their hero. I remember one woman, she was having trouble walking on the sidewalk, I kinda pulled up and stopped, and she goes 'are you available'," said Benjamin Schroeder.

Many taxi cabs are outfitted with studded tires, which helps them get around in the slick conditions.
