Kids enjoy an extra day of winter break with 'ice day'

An icy glaze all over the area made for some dangerous conditions Monday, and while a lot of that ice has melted away, some of it has not.

Some drivers abandoned their cars, while kids enjoyed an extra day of winter break. Every local school district canceled classes Monday after the metro area iced over.

Most families were hunkered down at home, but the few that a Fox 12 crew did see out and about where popping in the Lloyd Center movie theater for a matinee.

Some kids said they were on a hunt to find a pick-up basketball game, but most people were just out exploring. They were walking around very slowly on icy roads, trying to avoid cabin fever.

"It's kind of hard to walk, especially on the ice and the sidewalk," said 7-year-old Lucia Bruzual.

Southwest Portland resident Igor Bruzual told Fox 12, "I hope it passes. We get stuck at home because there's no buses riding around, we can't drive so we get stuck at home with them."

While there was a lot of thawing on sidewalks at lower elevations, up around Sylvan it was still very icy and slick.
