Local hospitals see increase in patients due to icy conditions

Posted: Updated:

Local hospitals have been extra busy with all the ice on the ground. One emergency room doctor told FOX 12, their patients have nearly doubled in the past few days.

At Providence Milwaukie Hospital Emergency Room, a doctor said they are seeing a lot of people who have fallen while walking on the ice, or have been in car accidents.

"Most of the injuries we see are orthopedic injuries. We see a lot of people that fall, broken ribs, broken wrist, things like that. In the worst case scenario it's head injuries. People hitting their head, things like that," said ER Physician Alex Lapidus.

Dr. Lapidus said while sledding is a lot of fun, you don't want to sled without a helmet. His advice to people out on the ice and snow is to treat it like you're riding a bike.

He recommends wearing a helmet while sledding, and wrist guards for children.
