PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A dog breeder attempting to raise 23 Italian greyhounds in a single-family home in Hillsboro is handing over the dogs to the Oregon Humane Society.

The dogs, including seven puppies, were set to receive medical evaluations Tuesday.

The Oregon Humane Society said the breeder, who is an elderly woman, voluntarily relinquished the dogs so they can receive any needed medical care and be offered for adoption.

The schedule for making the dogs available for adoption will depend on the results of their medical evaluations.

The seven puppies will go to the homes of Oregon Humane Society foster care volunteers, where they will be cared for until they are old enough to be adopted, which is expected to be around three weeks.

“Raising this many animals takes a huge amount of time and resources. The owner’s decision to turn over the animals to OHS means they will get the best of care and eventually be adopted by loving families,” said Sharon Harmon, OHS executive director.

Oregon Humane Society workers said the dogs appear to be in reasonably good health and well socialized. No citations have been issued against the owner.
