RAINIER, OR (KPTV) -

It was a night of remembrance as many in Rainier gathered at the city park to remember the life of a man who made a huge impact in the community.

Tuesday marks the 5th anniversary of Police Chief Ralph Painter's death.

Five years ago, Chief Painter responded to a disturbance call at a car audio store. When he arrived, he was confronted by Daniel Butts and the two struggled.

Police said Butts grabbed Painter's gun and shot him.

Every year since, a vigil is held for Chief Painter.

Ralph Painter's family members say more and more people come out each time and it's a humbling experience.

"We appreciate everybody helping us, and the determination to keep my dad's memory alive. That's really important to us as the years go on, that people don't forget and they continue to honor him through acts of kindness and helping others," said Julie Heuer, Painter's daughter.

Daniel Butts, the man accused of killing Painter, is still awaiting trial. Last fall, the Supreme Court sent him back to the Oregon State Hospital to undergo mental health treatment and become able to stand trial.
