Cornelius Pass Road reopens after semi overturns

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Cornelius Pass Road is now reopened from Northwest Skyline Boulevard to Highway 30 after a tanker truck carrying de-icer overturned.

The accident happened near Milepost 2 and the tunnel caves, according to reports.

The accident will cause delays for many drivers tonight, and officials suggest that most drivers should plan to use alternate routes, with smaller vehicles using Northwest Newberry Road and Northwest Cornell Road and large trucks using Highway 26.

Crews were able to come in with tow trucks and get the tank pulled back on to the road and upright, though de-icer fluid could be seen where the tank was on its side in the ditch.

The driver of the truck told Fox 12 that the tank that turned over held 1,500 gallons of de-icer, and that he was only driving 15 miles per hour at the time of the accident.

He said that while the truck and first tank made the turn, it was the second tank that turned over.

In addition to county road crews and local enforcement, hazardous materials crews were at the scene, and officials from the Department of Environmental Quality were also coming to inspect the spill, and to see if any of it had gone into nearby McCarthy Creek.
