PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

On Wednesday, students at Alder Elementary School got a visit from an NBA superstar who welcomed them back from Winter Break and presented the students with a new learning lab.

Thanks to the Chris Paul Family Foundation and its corporate partners, the kids at Alder in SE Portland now have a state-of-the-art technology lab.

Alder is just one of the low-income schools across the country selected by the foundation.

LA Clippers point guard Chris Paul said providing the gift of technology became his mission after a discussion with his wife several years ago.

"As we were walking through our son's school, and we saw so many apple computers, iPads and Smart Boards. And me and my wife had a conversation and said just because kids grew up on this side of town, it doesn't mean they should have any advantage education-wise on other kids," said Chris Paul.

The principal at Alder said Wednesday felt like Christmas for the students.

"They don't have computer equipment, especially newer computer equipment. So this donation allows our kids to have access to the newest fastest machine," said Principal Robert Stewart.

Of course, a visit from an NBA superstar also left an impression.

"He's a celebrity in their minds. So, that recognition from somebody who is so famous that way, I think acknowledges there own importance," said Principal Robert Stewart.

For Paul, giving back transcends the game of basketball.

"A lot of the kids here are homeless, and there are so many things, like I said, that we all take for granted. So just to see the smiles on the kids faces, and to see how excited they are, it really puts things into perspective," said Paul.

The Portland Trail Blazers play the LA Clippers on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
