Creative ways to spend that $500 million Powerball jackpot

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

It’s the kind of payout most people only dream about.

But with $500 million up for grabs in Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot, we asked people how they’d spend it.

“A house, that’s what I would buy with $500 million, and then give money to my family,” Savannah Service told Fox 12.

“The first million I’d get a super car,” Arun Purushan said.  “Then I’d put the rest in a savings deposit.”

But once those practical needs are taken care of, then what?

“Ah, I’d love to go into space,” Nick Lobue said.  “It doesn’t have to be Mars, but that would be nice.”

But why go alone?

Virgin Galactic is selling space flights for $250,000 per person.  So, you could bring 2,000 of your closest friends.

“If I won $500 million, I’d probably buy a plane ticket to somewhere warmer than we have right now,” Jayson Carley said.  “Belize is nice this time of year.”

You won’t be able to buy the country of Belize, but you could scoop up 31 undeveloped private islands off the coast of Dubai.

If the island life isn’t for you, but you do like to travel, you could fly to Paris tomorrow for $2,400.  And at that rate, you could bring all 15 Portland Trail Blazers with you.  But why stop there?  You could bring every single member of every NBA team, and still have more than $490 million left over.

If driving is more your speed, how about the 2016 Lamborghini Aventador?

It’s only half a million, so you could buy 1,000 of them and drive a different one every day for almost three years.

Or, if you really want to spread the wealth, you could give $125 to every person who lives in Oregon – and make roughly 4 million new friends in the process.
