PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Many people nowadays use texting as a form of communication and Portland city officials have announced that locals will soon be able to text 911.

The Portland City Council unanimously voted Wednesday to pass a resolution that would allow someone to text 911 dispatchers for help.

City officials said they recognize the role that texting plays in today’s society and they realized that there are times when people cannot always call 911.

Council members said those who are hearing or speech impaired will now have an easier way to ask for help.

The text message system will also help in situations where the caller is injured or unable to speak at the time.

City officials have not said when the texting service would start.
