Burn ban including fireplaces, wood stoves issued for Clark County

Posted: Updated:
CLARK COUNTY, WA (KPTV) -

The use of all fireplaces, pellet stoves, wood stoves and inserts is now prohibited in Clark County.

A Stage 2 burn ban was issued by the Southwest Clean Air Agency on Thursday.

Homes where wood burning is the only source of heat are exempt from the ban, but "we ask that you burn as clean as possible," according to the agency.

All outdoor wood burning is also prohibited.

The ban was issued due to cold weather, poor ventilation and increasing levels of fine particle air pollution in the county.

"Cold nights and a drop off in east winds followed by limited daytime ventilation and dispersion have caused fine particle air pollution levels to rise toward the federal health-based standard," according to an agency release.

The conditions are expected to continue through Friday and possibly beyond. The ban is in place until monitors and weather forecasts indicate improved ventilation and clearing.

According to Southwest Clean Air Agency, a Stage 2 burn ban means, "all wood heating is prohibited, including certified units, when a rapidly increased pollution trend and weather conditions indicate a high risk for exceeding air quality health standards."
