PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland's upcoming bike sharing program just got a big boost from Nike, nearly doubling the number of bikes that will be available for people to rent.

It's hard to believe that Portland, the most bike friendly city in the country, is one of the only major U.S. cities that doesn't have a bike sharing program yet. That all changes in July.

"I live in Vancouver, so coming down here and having a bike to ride whenever would be great," said Scott Patton.

Like a lot of locals, Scott Patton depends on TriMet to get around, but soon he'll have another option on two wheels.

The latest vehicle to join Portland's ride sharing craze are orange bikes from a program called Bike Town.

Portland was already on track to launch a bike sharing program this summer with 600 bikes, but on Thursday, city officials announced a $10 million partnership with Nike that adds 400 bikes to the mix.

The new smart bikes will have GPS, solar panels and a key pad to punch in your account pin, but you can also rent one with a credit card at any kiosk in the city.

"If you have friends visiting from out of state or tourists at the Convention Center, they'll love it because they can go up, use a credit card and check out a bike. No sign up or anything like that," said Dylan Rivera with PBOT.

Most Portlanders like the idea, but aren't sure they'd actually use the bikes.

"I'd probably ride my unicycle or maybe I'd ride the MAX, I don't know. I probably wouldn't use one myself, but I might not be their market," said cyclist Bryce Jacobsen.

Scott Patton thinks it's an exciting option for people who want in on Portland's cycling culture.

"Certainly downtown. I think so. It would be fun to be able to ride out to restaurants or see friends," said Patton.

City officials are still working out the details of the Bike Town program, but it will begin in July.
