SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

Salem Fire responded to a liquid oxygen leak in the 4600 block of northeast Windsor Way Thursday evening.

Salem Fire said the leak is contained but residents in at least 100 area were evacuated Thursday night.

As of Friday morning, 20 of those homes remain evacuated, and the rest were able to return home.

Crews said the major concern with the liquid oxygen leak is an explosion. Firefighters said it can mix with the petroleum in the asphalt and cause an explosion and could explode if cars run over it.

"You know, you are not prepared for it, when somebody says leave you take what is off your back, and you walk out the door," one resident said.

Firefighters are continuing to monitor the area in the immediate area of the leak, and the 20 families that are still evacuated should be able to return to their homes soon.

Emergency housing was established at the McKay High School gymnasium at northeast 2440 Lancaster Drive.

Salem residents are still asked to avoid the area.
