73-year-old tenant has eviction reversed after supporters plan rally

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

An online effort to support a 73-year-old man facing eviction without cause appears to have paid dividends, with the man’s eviction canceled by his property manager.

Margot Black, a pro-tenant activist, had been working with the man, and had organized a large demonstration in front of his apartment complex that was scheduled for Friday morning.

“I’ve looked at his paperwork.  He’s paid his rent on time, I’ve talked to his neighbors.  His neighbors are in absolute shock,” said Black. “He had nowhere to go and when I asked him where he was going to go, he said I guess I’ll move into my car.”

Thursday evening, Black got a phone call from the tenant, who asked not to be named, informing her that he and his landlord had reached an agreement that would allow him to remain in his apartment, which he had rented for more than 30 years.

“It shouldn’t have to come to that,” said Black. “It shouldn’t take this sort of all volunteer effort to keep a 73-year-old man in his home who should never have gotten a no-cause eviction in the first place.”

Black, whose family was evicted without cause in 2012, is hoping to raise awareness and pressure the Oregon Legislature to take up the issue of renter protection in the upcoming legislative session.
