A tanker filled with gasoline tipped over in a crash closing Cornelius Pass Road at Germantown Road on Friday.

Firefighters said a semi hauling two tankers was involved in a crash with a Ford F-150 pickup at around noon. Both drivers were able to escape without injury.

The semi and one of the tankers ended up overturning in a ditch and the tanker was leaking fuel.

A hazmat team was called out and an absorbent boom was put in place around the leak to stop it from spreading to the surrounding area.

Because the tanker was on its side, the cleanup crew couldn't directly access the port to offload the remaining gasoline from the tanker into a large tanker truck that was at the scene.

NRC, a private contractor that specializes in cleaning up this type of spill, planned to pierce the overturned tank to create an access point to offload the gasoline.

As a precaution for the offloading process, firefighters sprayed foam and remained on standby in case the gasoline ignited.

Cornelius Pass Road was expected to remain shut down between West Union and Skyline roads into the evening commute. Northwest Germantown Road was closed at Old Cornelius Pass Road.

Investigators said the woman driving the pickup was cited for a dangerous left turn, which was a contributing factor in the crash.

A truck carrying de-icer overturned earlier in the week shutting down Cornelius Pass Road from Skyline Boulevard to Highway 30.
