PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A night out to celebrate New Year’s ended with a local man in the hospital after he was stabbed in northwest Portland.

The victim's friends say it started with an encounter earlier that evening when a group of his friends were at a bar.

As the group left, they were confronted by the boyfriend of a woman they spoke with throughout the evening and some other men.

While the two groups walked south on Northwest 21st Avenue, the confrontation escalated and the victim was stabbed three times.

Martha Wiggers, a physician assistant, heard people start screaming between 2:00 a.m. and 2:30 a.m., and ran across the street to help when she heard someone was stabbed.

“The man was laying there screaming because he had been stabbed,” she recalled. “So I just got a towel from the bar, just tried to hold pressure and talk to him to calm him down because he was in a lot of pain, obviously, and also just really terrified and pretty freaked out.”

Investigators with the Portland Police Bureau said they don't have a suspect description, but are asking anyone with information on the incident to please call police.
